Platinum Group Metals Analysis for Car Catalyst Recycling

Measure palladium, platinum, and rhodium quickly and easily

Vanta™ handheld XRF analyzers provide fast, accurate measurement of the valuable platinum group metals (PGMs) palladium (Pd), platinum (Pt), and rhodium (Rh) found in car catalytic converter material. On-the-spot measurements enable efficient sorting and price evaluation of catalyst scrap throughout the recycling circuit.

Along with analytical excellence, Vanta handheld XRF analyzers feature exceptional durability. Every Vanta analyzer is IP55 or IP54 rated for dust and water resistance, drop tested to military standards (MIL-STD-810G), and withstands a wide temperature range of –10 °C to 50 °C (14 °F to 122 °F).

Fraud Protection

To help protect against fraud, Vanta XRF analyzers can detect elements that could be added to catalyst materials to falsely boost their precious metals values. The car catalyst element suite is comprehensive, so you know the materials you are buying have not been stripped of PGMs or added to or contaminated with elements such as:

The sorting of materials can be further aided with elements such as:

Fast and Accurate Sorting

Fast and Accurate Sorting

Before homogenization, recyclers should use the Vanta XRF analyzer to sort and separate materials of the same type. Sort into three or four grade ranges, such as oxygen sensors, three-way converters, two-way converters, and diesel particulate filters (DPF). To improve sorting, define these grade ranges within the analyzer database using the Pseudo Elements function.

Easy Sample Prep

For the most representative and accurate results, we recommend you grind, sieve, and homogenize the catalyst samples to properly prepare them for XRF analysis. Combine the analyzer with the portable Vanta Work Station to take PGM measurements in a fully interlocked system. The Vanta Work Station offers hands-free testing of catalyst samples for an easier and more comfortable analysis.

Optimized for Car Catalyst Recycling

Optimized for Car Catalyst Recycling

Vanta™ handheld XRF analyzers are used throughout the car catalyst recycling process to quickly verify and price material. Within minutes, the Vanta analyzer can identify the platinum group metals (PGMs) platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), and rhodium in spent catalyst. When properly sorted and prepared, these valuable metals can be recovered and reused to produce new car catalytic converters and other equipment.

No matter your position in the recycling circuit, Vanta™ handheld XRF analyzers can optimize your process and quality while maximizing your return on investment. From decanning through sorting, crushing, and grinding to preparing the shipment for refining, the fast XRF results enable you to avoid empty and contaminated cores and provide the ideal mix for further refining.
